Interview with Alison Bird, Earthquake Seismologist at Natural Resources Canada
Recommendations:
Neighborhood plan.
Have a family plan with an out of province or earthquake zone contact person that everyone will text and they will keep track of information gather about close friends and loved ones.
Prepare!
Go around your house and do the small earthquake preparedness recommendations.
Have an earthquake kit that will last 2 weeks and include; camping equipment works great, water, food you like, wind up flashlight, wind up radio, bucket with bags, medications, point of contact and contact lists, i'm ok sign, cash, shelter,

Interview with Alison Bird, Earthquake Seismologist at Natural Resources Canada
- What do you do with Shake Out BC? Subject matter for Scientific Material.
- How long have you been doing this? Oct. 2011
- What sparked your interest in Earthquakes? Physics to accident to not looking back.
- Have you ever been in an earthquake? Haida Gwaii aftershocks Oct. 27 (circular motion in horizontal plane)
- Where is the worst earthquake zone in the world? Japan
- How does Victoria rate in Earthquake zones? Significant High Hazard!
- DO you feel Victoria is prepared for an Earthquake? Not yet. Only 16% partook in ShakeOut BC
- How do you think we will fare? If MegaThruster Not good.
- What issues do you see arising in the event of an Earthquake? Communications limited (texting available... stay off your phones!)/roads impassable/no water/no electricity/no food for 2 weeks.
- What solutions would you like to see? Individuals taking initiative, Neighbourhood Planning, Preparations around homes, Public education.
- What is the biggest threat in an event of an Earthquake here in Victoria? Architecture not tested, old brick buildings, liquefaction, apathetic.
- When preparing an earthquake kit, how long should it be geared to last for? 2 weeks! Look into bolting your first level of home too!
- Are there earthquake seasons? If so what are they? No BUT.... ALong the Cascadia fault there is a increase in activity every 14.5 months for 2 weeks. During this increased activity there is an increase of risk for a MegaThruster earthquake.
- Is there any way to predict earthquakes? Any new possible technology in the work? More like forecasting extra risk.
- What is the emergency response expected to be like here in Victoria? There is a method in place for the response and is improving. They are int he works of implementing some key communication between local departments and response teams for optimal efficiency. The first 24 hours is the most important time to rescue and decrease mortalities. It will depend on LOCAL initiatives. Get them out fast. Key time. We don;t have a lot of people so is the challenge.
- Do you know of an earthquake simulator? Thereis one that is not for the public though at UBC. There is also the ShakeTruck.
- How many earthquakes are there in Victoria yearly? about 900 but there are around small in magnitude.
- What has been the biggest magnitude here? In the 1700's there was a Megathruster that was 9.2 ish and tsunami. In 1946 the island had a 7.3 earthquake. Here is Victoria there was little damage, broken chimneys, plaster damage. In 2001 Olympia had a 6.8 and again little damage in Victoria.
- Was there any damage?
- Do you find people generally prepared for Earthquakes here in Victoria area? No... apathetic.
- Where would emergency earthquake equipment be stored to protect itself from an earthquake? Shipping Containers in Esquimalt up high above tsunami threat.
- What are you thoughts on our UAV idea? Likes the idea of help to find and rescue people... she sees there being use with going into rubble to find if there are people to rescue because otherwise all rubble needs to be explored and 24 hours are crucial live rescue range.
- Have you found an Earthquake detector that works? They are basically seismometers. May or may not work as found on the P wave (sound). If too close won;t register as not enough time. The Massey tunnel in Vancouver has an earthquake alarm so that is it detects an earthquake or gets a message in from an alert station the light will turn into an x saying that danger not to enter to prevent people from being in the tunnel upon an earthquake.
- Why don't we use earthquake detectors here? Some used but not generally due to inaccuracies.

Discussed our ideas and how to adapt....
1. Earthquake Table Hack? SO that any table can be modified this way.
2. Earthquake Alarm that talks instructions Drop Cover Hold on along with beeping.
3. UAV land rovers to go through rubble (consider radio wave use too!)
